After
my first trail run in early February, I decided to keep training on the trail.
I would get up early in the morning to hit the trail and still make it back in
time to look presentable for work. At first the morning runs were cold, with
temperatures in 20’s and 30’s. The cooler temperatures didn’t bother me
anymore. I loved the frost covered ground and the slight nip in the air. I
really enjoyed these morning runs, because it gave me some time to think and
ponder life. It was so peaceful as I got lost in each run.
My life
was had gone through so many life changes at once. I had gone through a major
break up, gotten my first big girl job and moved all at the exact same time during
the previous summer. I never really had time to process it all. I would just go
to work and try and survive the chaos that was thrown at me each day. I never
dealt with the feelings of my failed relationship and being so new to town, I
didn’t have friends to talk to about it. These runs gave me time to think and
feel some of the things that I had been struggling to keep in.
As the
days went on, the temperatures began to rise. It was in the 60’s and 70’s in
the middle of February! I continued my training plan all the way until the day
of my race. However, during the week of my race I was in a car accident.
Luckily, I was not severely hurt. I managed to get by with just soreness to the
head, ribs and knees that went away within 48 hours. The accident left me
shaken up, but thankful that I wasn’t seriously injured.
I ran my
last couple of miles before my race with a group of women known as the Dirt
Divas. They are a fun group of women! I only ran a mile with them before
turning around and running back. Despite the accident, I felt strong. I
finished my last mile happy that I had made it through all my training. I was
very surprised at how fast the weeks went. Somewhere along the journey I fell in love with the trail. I was ready for the Pi River
Rotation half marathon!
